The Road To San Antone: Czech Stop

by Robert Bostick
The wife had a conference in San Antonio and it was decided that we’d make it a family affair so we loaded up the KIA and headed South, and thought it might be interesting to document some of the stops along the way.
Anytime (and I mean every time) we drive up or down  the I-35 corridor there is the obligatory pullover at that Capitol of Kolaches in West, TX known as the Czech Stop.  Since 1983 this deli-bakery-Shell station has been crankingout Czechoslovakian goodness that has six hundred travelers daily taking exit 353 to fill their tanks and their bellies.

Happy Hour At Sissy’s Is Southern Fried Fun

by Steven Doyle

Happy hour yesterday was all about Sissy’s Southern Kitchen and Bar as the staff there rolled out their new cocktail menu. Big hits for the night included the Tea Thyme  which is made up of Belvedere Lemon Tea Vodka, Thyme, Lemon Tea Vodka, Lemon and Honey, and the Colonel Sanders which is a healthy dose of Maker’s 46, Benedictine and Orange Bitters.

Tea Thyme is a sweeter concoction, but still a heady cocktail that creeps up on the unsuspecting soul. The Colonel Sanders is plucking good and stops you in your tracks with a smooth finish. The colonel himself would order at least three.           Continue reading

Naughty And Nice Fruits And Vegetables Outed

by Steven Doyle

The Environmental Working Group is a non-profit organization that publishes an annual list detailing what they call the Dirty Dozen, or a variety of fruits and vegetables that are most polluted with pesticides. The EWG sets out to protect the most vulnerable segment of our population, namely children, and also looks to replace governmental guidelines with regards to the environment and our sustainable development.

All that being said, this year’s Dirty Dozen list includes fruits and vegetables you might normally consider somewhat safe such as potatoes and celery. The top offenders includes apples, peaches and strawberries.      Continue reading

Palomar Names New Director Of Pet Relations

by Arnold Jones

The Hotel Palomar has announced another major staffing change. No, Graham Dodd is still the exec chef at Central 214. The new employe goes by a single name: Higgins, director of pet relations.

The position of pet relations is a demanding one, as the Kimpton property is proudly pet- (and gay-) friendly, with food and water bowls and hotel I.D. and “wag bags” provided for four-legged guests.     Continue reading

by Steven Doyle

We just met the latest executive chef to run The Commissary since chef David McMillan took over the spot from John Tesar. Tesar sold his stake in the business to pursue his next restaurant challenge, Spoon in north Dallas. The new chef is Ross Demers and you quite possibly heard of him from Mi Piaci in Addison.

Demers was classically trained at the Cordon Bleu in Los Angeles and has been cheffing for the past eight years.

We asked what sort of changes the chef had in mind and he had plenty to offer.      Continue reading

Kuczwaj On Path For Success At Bailey’s

by Steven Doyle

We have been following the changes at Bailey’s Prime Plus for many months now.  The interesting local restaurant that up until just weeks ago had locations in Dallas, Cedar Hill, Fairview and Fort Worth. I say recently because the Fort Worth has closed with the explanation that although it was actually successful, there was an offer for the space that was far too good to pass up.

With the advent of hiring Ken Kuczwaj as overseer and general manager for the Bailey’s family of restaurants, there have actually been some very positive changes. Let’s look at those and see some current results.   Continue reading
