Genaro’s Offers Excellent Mix Of Yucatan-Style Seafood

genaro1by Steven Doyle

On our adventure to fined excellent seafood in Dallas during this time of Lent, we found a restaurant that is steeped up in seafood.  Although not a traditional seafood restaurant, Genaro’s opened for business in November of 2013 and serves up a healthy amount of seafood with traditional Yucatan and Tex Mex-style offerings. The restaurant is owned and operated by Chef Genaro Silva. You may know Silva from such restaurants as Genaro’s Tropical, Moctezuma’s, Garmo’s which he operated as far back as the 1980’s. They also had the bent towards fresh seafood.

Updated Menu At Goodfriend

schnitzengruebenby Steven Doyle

Many of you have experienced the amazing patio offerings at Goodfriend Beer Garden and Burger House. They have been open just over a year in their East Dallas digs, and have been crazy busy selling their amazing selection of brews and those killer burgers made by the crew next door at Good 2 Go Taco. There is a little pass through that enables Goodfriend to take all the credit for those burgers, but they are really being cranked out by chefs Jeana Johnson and Colleen O’Hare.

We just received word that there are a few new menu items at Goodfriend, and we will be heading over there this evening to graze through the offerings.      Continue reading

The Lake House To Open In Old Dallas Bicycle Cafe Location

DSC05357by Steven Doyle

Meet John Schmitz and Eric Paulsen. Actually you may know these guys already; they have been serving you in several capacities for many years in a whole host of Dallas area restaurants and bars. Now the guys are about to open their own entry into the pub scene with their own new concept located in the old Dallas Bicycle Café location at 7510 E Northwest Hwy called The Lake House.

The Lake House will feature cocktails, craft beer and what they hope to be delicious bar food in an area bereft of this sort of talent. The pub hangs just off the White Rock Creek Trail and in the shares an enormous parking lot with Dallas Bike Works. The pair of new owners plan to work with the bike shop to gear events that will cater to riders who enjoy the trail, and liken the new spot to the Katy Trail.  Continue reading

Hypnotic Donuts Invites Cheese-Beer Maven To Create A Special Chicken Biscuit

DSC04799by Steven Doyle

Ali Kay Hammer is back on our radar again, this time the Scardello cheese monger is getting her biscuit on at Hypnotic Donuts on Garland Road in East Dallas. If you recall, just a week ago Ali was rocking the Peticolas house during their first anniversary with her wedding to the beer Velvet Hammer.

Beginning tomorrow and at least through the end of the month of January, you can experience what it is like in Ali’s mouth by ordering her version of the chicken biscuit. This is an ongoing program at Hypnotic and there have been more than a few fun versions of the chef driven biscuit since owner James St. Peter decided to invite chefs to play in his wacky kitchen once a month. Last month we all enjoyed The Grape owner Brian Luscher’s homemade sausages in a bun, this month we see what Ali has to offer.     Continue reading

20 Feet Seafood Joint Slated to Open In About A Week

DSC04767 by Steven Doyle

Last night I caught up with chef Marc Cassel after noticing some heavy activity happening at his soon-to-open Peavey Road seafood restaurant, 20 Feet Seafood Joint. I spotted Cassel readying the space from my perch at Goodfriend and shot him a text asking for a few minutes when he was finished with his business. An hour later the chef grabbed me for a quick tour.

The restaurant will hold about 50 seats and should open in about a week. The time changed every time I asked him, so I stopped asking and settled with the answer I wanted to hear.   Continue reading

Peak And Elm Concina And Bar Opening Soon In East Dallas

by Steven Doyle

The Moreno family, who owns several locations of La Popular Tamale House, have decided to open a Mexican restaurant in East Dallas in the growing artsy district at Peak and Elm.  In fact, the new restaurant will be called Peak and Elm Cocina and Bar.

The new restaurant has been under construction with great attention for detail to the existing space. The restaurant sits on what was formerly the street car line, and just across the street once housed the street cars at the end of their run through East Dallas. For this reason Jesse Moreno says he plans on bringing one of the original cars to the back patio area for private dining.      Continue reading

Alex Perez Speaks Out About the Spicy Chili Donut Contest at Hypnotic

by Alex Perez

I get asked all the time, “Alex, why do you do the crazy things you do like food competitions?”  I tell them that besides enjoying pain and suffering, I actually enjoy chowing down the food.  That brings me to this past Saturday’s event held at Hypnotic Donuts in East Dallas – The Spicy Chile Donut Eating Contest.  I normally cancel everything to commit and do as many food competitions as possible but due to the conflicting dates of a pre-existing event, I was not going to attend the donut challenge.  So I thought.  I must admit that I was a tad saddened about not being able to compete in the Spicy Donut competition, but that all changed Friday morning.

I received news Friday from a friend that we were in fact not going on our planned trip and quickly made the decision to email Hypnotic Donuts to sign up for the challenge.  The owner of Hypnotic, James, responded quickly and confirmed I had a spot in the competition. It was on.          Continue reading
