The New Herrera’s On Fitzhugh Is Gone: Blame Obama

by Steven Doyle

Call it doomed territory, or perhaps more like a poor choice of locations for Tex Mex in a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood. The neighbors on Fitzhugh aren’t going for those gooey beef enchiladas or hard shell tacos that Herrera‘s is putting out. The Fitzhugh neighborhood demands the real deal taqueria style tacos that only cost a buck.      Continue reading →

Bryan Street Tavern Has New Kitchen And A Real Chef

by Steven Doyle

In just a few short years Bryan Street Tavern etched its way into the dive bar scene with its great pizza and cold beer.  Bryan Street always has a good line up of bands and there is plenty of room to mix and mingle with the swelled crowds each weekend. The fenced in patio area is near legendary.

So why go and muck it all up with more beer taps, and a fancy new kitchen? I will answer my own question: because it is awesome.   Continue reading →

It’s All About The Dough

by Judy Chamberlain

Who doesn’t love pizza?

Lucky Dallas, we’re getting to be something of a mecca for Neapolitan style pizza, that of the thin crust and chewy texture. It’s new to many, trendy and certainly different. Sicilian,Chicago, New York or even California pizza this is not.

The latest entry into the pizza a la Napolitano fray is Dough, on Preston Road.          Continue reading →

Secure Your Tickets NOW for the 2012 Chefs Of Summer Event

by Jerry Stewart

The Greater Dallas Restaurant Association is reaching out with their coming event this weekend that will benefit local schools with culinary programs. Cocktails, wine, and beer with heavy hors d’oeuvres and desserts will be provided by Wolfgang Puck Catering.

This event differs from so many of the walk around fundraisers where you taste each chef’s offerings. Instead you will mill about with the chefs and bid on their different auction packages. This is where the fun comes in as the chefs have prepared some fun packages that might be just a bit different than your usual silent auction bid.

Here are a few of the things you can expect to see offered up at the event:      Continue reading →

2nd Annual Deep Ellum Brew B-Q Tasted Pretty Damned Good

by David Donalson

What can be a more American way to celebrate Memorial Day than to drink beer and eat barbecue? Deep Ellum Brewing Company agreed and Sunday was the 2nd annual Brew-B-Q in the new Beer Garden and they brought friends: Martin House Brewing, Armadillo Ale Works and (512). From 6-10pm, it was a mad house of samplings, food and music.

When we walked up to Deep Ellum Brewing Company, I was surprised by the line of people waiting to buy a ticket and get inside. It was at least 50 deep and the facility was already packed. This is a good sign for all of the new craft breweries opening up in North Texas. The setup was simple once inside, far right was Whole Food and barbecue and there were several stations set up throughout the garden giving samples. If you haven’t been to too many events like this, the trick is to drink while in line. Get your sample, find the next line you want to get into and socialize from there to maximize your samples.                      Continue reading →

New Flavors And Toppings At Pinkberry, Plus Win Some Froyo Of Your Own

by Steven Doyle

With the summer heat slowly rising to a simmering broil we thought it best to bring you some relief and looked up one of the masters of cool Adam Saxton of the Saxton Group which owns four local Pinkberry franchises in the DFW area.

Adam has a pretty cool job in that he develops long term strategic real estate plans anmarketing for the Pinkberry brand locally.  He also gets to enjoy as much of the frozen yogurt he cares to lap up each day. Adam agreed to meet with us this afternoon at one of his stores located at Preston and Royal and we sampled some of the new offerings.              Continue reading →

Kalachandji’s Re-Opens Today After Fire Scare

by Steven Doyle

I stopped by Kalachandji’s this weekend to check out the damage to the kitchen during a recent fire at the Krishna Temple and was met with some good news for those craving their vegetarian fix.  The restaurant should be open today and there was actually no damage to the kitchen or restaurant itself other than a bit of smoke.   Continue reading →

Kenny Bowers Checks Out The Memphis World Championship BBQ Cook-Off

by Kenny Bowers

When we caught wind that Kenny Bowers was traveling to the  BBQ Cook-Off in Memphis we clamored to have him send us the details.  Kenny, who is the chef-owner of Kenny’s Woodfire Grill, Kenny’s Italian and Kenny’s Burger Joint did one step better and penned a fun look at his week of competition and BBQ.

As a kid growing up in Boston, when someone said BBQ we thought hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill; Texas was my BBQ culture shock.

The southern culture thrives off BBQ and Memphis is a big driving force in how to do it right.  Every year, a month long festival takes over Memphis, TN.  The appropriately named, Memphis in May consists of four main events:

  • The Beale Street Music Festival
  • International Week
  • Sunset Symphony
  • Most importantly, the BBQ Cooking Contest           Continue reading →
