Chef Josh Black Lands At People’s Last Stand

by Steven Doyle

We have been following Josh Black since he was at Stephan Pyles, and eventually landing the executive chef position at CampO.  Recently Black made off and scored the lead kitchen duties at the People’s Last Stand located in Mockingbird Station. At first this seemed like an odd choice for someone trained as well as Black, but upon further inspection it made glaring sense.

The down side for a chef at People’s Last Stand is that there really isn’t a kitchen. The space was built for a cocktail wonderland, and certainly the staff has excelled greatly in that department.  A recent visit had me sitting on the edge of my seat as general manager and lead bartender Omar Yeefoon, formerly of Cedars Social, was perfecting a made-from-scratch tonic.  He had several vials sitting out and was conferring with his staff to see which they might be serving that evening.  They were all good, of course.     Continue reading →

We Power Coupled At Del Frisco

by Steven Doyle

Last evening we tried out the summer Del Frisco Double Eagle Steak House deal, the Power Couple that offers a full meal for two at $99, not including drinks or gratuity.  We were met at the door by the familiar face of the sommelier Jennifer Jaco who had invited us in, and we were elated when she offered to give us a tour of the wine cellar after our dinner.

As you can imagine, the dinner was very good. What’s not to like about Chef David Holben’s steaks? The beef offered is a prime filet that is smattered with peppercorns and seared immaculately, as expected. But the star for us was the crab cake that is also included in the Power Couple deal. The crab cake was made of crab, some seasonings, and very little else. It didn’t take long to tackle the large cake.         Continue reading →

Rock & Roll Taco Premiers Tonight At La Grange

by Steven Doyle

Taco eaters rejoice. Tonight is the grand opening of Rock and Roll Taco’s debut inside the Deep Ellum bar La Grange. Food truck operators James Quinonez and his wife, Mary Ann Quinonez, have joined forces with La Grange owners Stephanie and Rob Schumacher to open this rocking new restaurant inside their bar.

Before starting the restaurant, James and Mary Ann were already well known for supplying gourmet food to Dallas with their premier food truck.  Although these trucks serve a wide variety of food, Rock and Roll Tacos is a decidedly Mexican restaurant with a rock and roll feel.     Continue reading →

May Roundup: The House on the Hill

by Dr. Spin

After an evening of karaoke at The Highball, we found ourselves stranded at our friend’s house by a violent thunderstorm. Somehow, our children all slept through the maelstrom while we watched the storm roll in over the hill country with respectful awe, an awe that gave way to intimidation as the lightning struck the cell towers around us. It was another one of those unexpected bonding experiences that strengthened our long friendship with this couple.

We slept in their guest bed that night, and when we woke up in the morning I rolled over to my wife and said, quite matter-of-factly, “let’s move out here.” As the Little One grows increasingly active, it is becoming more and more obvious that she is going to need her own space before we decide on our PhD research agendas. In addition to getting into a nice community with reasonably sized lots, this seemingly straightforward decision also offered the opportunity to be close to our friends and their own little one, who is less than a month older than ours. go up the hill to the Pharmacy

DaLat’s Kanh Nguyen On Why Fitzhugh Is An Inspring Location For A Restaurant

by Steven Doyle

Khanh Nguyen is the owner of DaLat, the new Vietnamese inspired restaurant located in the former RedFork location on Fitzhugh just east of I75 in Dallas. The location has met with a few tragic tales, including one we mention today about Herrera’s shuttering next door after just a few months of operation.  But this news doesn’t frighten Nguyen who feels it is a strong and transitioning neighborhood.        Continue reading →
