Kung Pao Tofu Taco_Velvet Tacoby Steven Doyle

Each week Velvet Taco announces what they call the WTF, or Weekly Taco Feature. Cute, eh? This week’s Weekly Taco Feature puts tofu in the spotlight with the spicy Kung Pao Tofu Taco. The Kung Pao is made with fried tofu, peanuts, green onions topped with Asian Bamboo Salad and wrapped in a crisp lettuce wrap.

This one sounded so delicious that we had to share. Available now through Sunday, August 9.

TBD Opens in Dallas Uptown

tbd3

TBD is a new nightlife concept opening August 11 in Uptown Dallas. Located at McKinney and Hall, TBD operates as a full-service restaurant and transitions into a high-energy lounge as the evening continues, making it a one-stop destination for people to enjoy good food, good drinks and lively dancing in a polished setting.

Inside, TBD’s white-on-white bar and brown leather banquettes keep things clean and modern. The rotating stock of local and national art adds pops of color and culture to the setting, while a DJ spins lively music to keep the energy high. Outside, the comfortable covered patio expands the space and anchors one of the hottest corners in the city.

Completing the dedication to aesthetic detail is the staff. Each member of the bar and floor team is a model from the Campbell Agency, adding an extra dose of attractiveness to this unique concept.   Continue reading →

I Before E Except After Beer

duke-kahanamoku-on-outrigger-canoeby Ned Steel IV

I’ve been accused of being a member of the Grammar Police and I won’t deny that I’m a bit of a pain in the ass when it comes to people using “to” in place of “too” or “your” in place of “you’re” or the misuse of everyone’s favorite trio, “there, their, they’re”. I try to let it go, chalking it up to people being lazy or just not paying attention, but when people start butchering names, my eye starts to twitch.

While perusing the social media craft beer group message boards, I often see Fritz Rahr’s beloved family brewery spelled out as Rarh or Rhar or the ever confusing Rawr. What are we, a pride of lions? I wonder silently if Fritz twinges when he sees this or if he just brushes it off since its probably been happening to his family for generations. But what about Michael Peticolas? Having recently sat down with Michael and his lovely wife, Melissa, I got a little history on the Peticolas name. Knowing what naming their brewery with their family name means to them, it makes MY head hurt when I’m looking over a tap list and read Peticola Seasonal. Really?! I see you have the local Peti Cola on here but I was wondering if you had any aged Crystal Pepsi Cola hidden in the back of the cooler? Some might explain it away as a limit of characters on the menu layout. Those explanations would be rebutted by the next line reading New Belgium Fat Tire. Count the letters and you’ll see that the argument of “not enough space” gets torn to shreds. People that use their own names for businesses want it carry a connotation of respect and recognition. Would it kill you to spell it right?   Continue reading →

Greenville Avenue Pizza Company Celebrating 8 Years of Pie

DSC08525by Steven Doyle

Pizza is big business in Dallas, as it is across the country. This is something that Sammy and Molly Mandell, owners of Greenville Avenue Pizza Company are all too familiar with. They have taken their small pizza concern started eight years ago and taken it to be one of the top producing restaurants of its kind in the nation. From the looks of the building, which stood the test of time through renovation and gentrification of the lowest Greenville area which is now engulfed in some seriously good restaurants now, you wouldn’t know that they have over fifty employees and sell a ton of dough each year. Well, more than a ton.   Continue reading →
