Hail Caesar! Competiton This Sunday

by Steven Doyle

There is a fantastic event this weekend and it kind of snuck up on us. Has it been a year since the last Caesar Salad Competition? Running twenty years strong and ferreting out the ultimate in Caesars, the American Institute of Wine & Food is hosting the twentieth version this Sunday, October 30th, at the Westin Galleria Dallas, from 1 to 5PM.

Returning are ten of the past twenty chefs which are still in the DFW area, and one of the talented chefs will be crowned the ultimate king of Caesars.            Continue reading

Meet Cedar’s Bartender Trina Nishimura

by Steven Doyle   photos by Robert Bostick

I like to fancy myself as a cocktail specialist. I like to drink them. I like to make them. I like to discuss them when I am not drinking or making them.  One thing I recently noted while making my way across the city in search of something new to sip, the craft cocktail movement that is taking Dallas by storm lacks representation by the fairer sex.  There are plenty of women that can toss a gin and tonic and open a bottle of beer, but there are very few that are making the crazy good pre-Prohibition stuff.

I have enjoyed the drinks that Louise Owens makes at Windmill Lounge for years, and she is tops in her game. But trying to think of another woman that is throwing down high octane drinks with flair, and I am remiss.  That is until I ran into Trina Nishimura at Cedars Social on Lamar.       Continue reading

More Underground Chef Info

by Crave Staff

There are still some seats available for Saturday night’s underground dinner with chef Nicole. She sends word that this Saturday will be particularly special with a guest Ali Morgan from Scardello, who will be showcasing cheeses.

Remember, Nicole is a classically trained chef who has cut her chops at such places as Nana and Bolsa here in Dallas.

We had a chance to catch up with Nicole during a recent dinner she was hosting and the cheese course was particularly breath-taking.  Continue reading

Rhost Opens Quietly And With Aplomb

by Steven Doyle

Rohst, the new Korean-style restaurant on Greenville Avenue has opened its doors, even if it was quietly allowing the staff to shake out any kinks in service before making an official announcement.

The new building that was in the former Terilli’s location has risen from its ashes and made way for a beautiful new structure that although new blends well with the neighborhood.  You may find several nods to the past in the Greenville Avenue Bar and Grill sign planted in front of Rhost, and many photos from the past inside the new restaurant.

Rohst is clean, sleek and inviting inside with a mezzanine level that seats 85 and a rooftop bar that can hold upwards to 100 with a total seating capacity of 400.  Continue reading

A First Look at Taco Ocho

by Steven Doyle

This weekend marked another collection of days mired with fantastic tastes and culinary experiences, starting off boldly with a visit to the new Taco Ocho located in Richardson.  Although we do not normally discuss fast food restaurants on craveDFW (remember how nearly silent we stood with the recent In-N-Out brouhaha?), Taco Ocho is a new generation taqueria that lifts itself deftly above the rest. Ocho offers a unique perspective on the entire taco genre and although quick to serve, hardly qualifies as fast food.  Continue reading

Sunday Brunch: Smoke

There are many qualities that define a good chef: a well organized kitchen, an inviting dining space, and certainly delicious food that’ll keep you coming back for more.  But what makes a great chef?  At Smoke, Chef and co-owner Tim Byres is finding the roots of great food again.  He pushes the limit when it comes to finding resources and suppliers for ingredients and goes even further with going back to basic good ‘ole fashion cooking techniques.  This week for Sunday Brunch, Chef Byres will be sharing his infamous Blueberry Pancakes served with Vanilla Poached Apricots and Fresh Cream.  Continue reading
