Lionfish Collaboration Dinner With TJ’s And Driftwood

lionfishby Jennifer Thomas

Monday, January 13, TJ’s Seafood Market and Driftwood will present Dallas’ first lionfish dinner prepared by Chef Omar Flores. Together, TJ’s and Driftwood, along with Traditional Fisheries founder Dave Johnson (as seen on ABC’s Shark Tank), hope to introduce Dallas’ food purveyors, chefs and diners to this delicacy that is invading and destroying the North Western Atlantic and Caribbean.

Lionfish are non-native to the Atlantic and Caribbean, and while it is not certain how the species was introduced to these waters, it’s possible they are released aquarium pets. The invasion is incredibly dangerous to Atlantic and Caribbean ecosystems as lionfish eliminate organisms that fulfill important ecological roles within coral reefs. Native reef fish populations decrease by 80 percent when lionfish enter new areas. Dave Johnson found a solution to the problem – catch the fish and cook them.    Continue reading

Driftwood’s Fall Menu Is No Fish Tale

driftwoodby Melissa Robert

The temperatures are dropping and coats are finally being donned in Dallas, which can only mean one thing, Fall menus are upon us. Lucky North Texas diners are seeing new plates surface at their favorite eateries across the Metroplex. I had the pleasure of sharing a meal with colleagues Tuesday night at Driftwood near the Bishop Arts area of Oak Cliff. If you didn’t know why they created the DLink bus before, the seafood cuisine at Driftwood will leave no doubt in your mind that they are a fixture in the destination dining landscape.

With right around fifty seats, the dining room is intimate, and even on a Tuesday evening the patrons are plentiful and energetic. The outdoor space accommodates an additional twenty guests and features a fireplace as well as a second side to the main bar which is fully exposed when the accordion-style glass is folded back. While at the bar, inside or out, order a cocktail off the Fall drink menu. Behind the bar, Michael will whip up a Holy Grail with fresh cranberries and chai that will quench your liquid holiday needs. Also, look for a new bar bites menu to be available in the next week or two.    Continue reading

More Midnight Ramen At Ten Bells Tavern This Saturday

ramen1by Steven Doyle

Justin Holt’s last night at Lucia is this Saturday. After that you can find the up-and-coming chef cooking alongside his new boss and execu-chef, Omar Flores at Driftwood. You may recall the Holt name from his delightful pop-up ramen nights at a few Oak Cliff bars. The young chef would spend a week conjuring up killer ramen, which happens to be one of the hot new trends in dining, serving it up in cute Styrofoam cups for a mere five bucks.

Soon after Holt announced he was making his move to the seafood-centric restaurant Driftwood, he made comments about giving up on his ramenriffic dreams. Well, this is simply not true. When we caught wind of the new ramen night, which will be held at Ten Bells Tavern in the Bishop Arts District in Oak Cliff, we checked in on Holt. “I’ve got a game plan that should keep me on the road to ramageddon I’m going to stick with it,” said the chef.    Continue reading

Each week we scour the city in search of the very best Dallas has to offer. We check into restaurants both old and new looking for interesting food to discuss with you so you can make handy decision when dining out.

We do not necessarily write up each item we enjoy, and often have photos that we will save for another week. However, we will share some of the most awe-inspiring dishes on Friday in what we like to call Friday’s Five Fabulous Food Finds.       Continue reading

by Steven Doyle    photos by Joey Stewart

A week before Oak Cliff’s newest restaurant opened, Driftwood, we checked out the new menu and digs.  We were happy to report that it looked extremely promising and we were excited to see chef  Omar Flores, formerly of Abacus, leading the fight in the kitchen.

We found the seafood to be fresh and inviting.    Continue reading

First Look: Driftwood

by Steven Doyle

We  were given a first look at the new Oak Cliff restaurant Driftwood  just next door to Bolsa Mercado at 642 West Davis, in what was previous a dark Con Fusion, now owned by Jonn Baudoin. Baudoin graduated with an Industrial Design degree from the University of South Louisiana in Lafayette and has worked at many top restaurants in Dallas as General Manger including Dallas Fish Market, Nicola, Nikita, Salve and Mi Piaci.

The general theme of the menu is seafood and the restaurant’s overall feel, which was designed by Daniela Baudoin’s company Vision 360 Design, is brightened by sea-foam and cool woods, and sports a beautiful patio.     Continue reading
