Review: Shell Shack For Crabs, Shrimp, Crawfish and More

by Steven Doyle

After a short wait you are approached table-side by a perky member of the waitstaff who scribbles their name on the white butcher paper clad table and asks for your favorite beverage. There is plenty to choose from at Shell Shack, now with locations spread across Dallas and Fort Worth, no doubt with more on the way. We order, we drink. Then the decision time arrives, what to order from this seemingly vast menu.

Without a doubt, crab is to be on the short list of what to order. But it is nearing crawfish season, and even though we are told they are not the largest we will find, those are coming once the weather stabilizes and they are large enough now to enjoy. There are no conspiracies to keep large crawfish from the mitts of Dallasites as your Houston friends might try to tell you. Shell Shack procures the best graded crawfish available. Think mid-March, around St. Pat’s Day for the best crop. Consider that the luck of the Irish. Continue reading

When is it Safe to Consume Oysters?

You may have heard the legend that good oysters are available only during months that contain an “r” in their name and that those months constitute oyster season. The rule dates back to the days before refrigeration when oysters could spoil quickly. These days, you can enjoy oysters throughout the year, but it is still important to know in which months oysters are in season and where you can get the tastiest oysters that won’t leave you feeling ill.

Ocean Prime Still in its Prime

by Joey Stewart photos by Joey Stewart

The last time CraveDFW featured Ocean Prime we showcased the huge Red King Crab legs that had just been flown in from Bristol Bay. As this was over two years ago, we thought it was time to head back and see how it’s keeping up with all the competing seafood spots that have opened in Dallas since that report.

Ocean Prime Uptown is one of sixteen locations across the states and boasts a menu that features items like sushi and poke, indulgent seafood entrees, prime steaks, desserts, signature cocktails, and a Wine Spectator-honored wine list.

The dark, retro dining room is still packed with well-heeled guests, the service is stellar from start to finish, and each dish we tasted was expertly cooked. In short, it hasn’t missed a step. We chose to sit in the more relaxed and bright “Terrace,” which allows for a casual dining experience.

Seafood Shack Still Full of Surprises

seafood-shack1by Steven Doyle

Seafood Shack on Webbs Chapel very near Forest Lane has been a long tradition for lunch, with big flavors that are fairly easy on the wallet. So is true for the newer and prettier version located on Northwest Highway and Marsh Lane. The latter offers a full bar, an airy patio and many more seats.

A recent visit for dinner netted some great finds included what they called fried octopus, which gave us odd visions of a heavy battered fish. Instead, we found the dish to be light with a crispy sautee, punctuated with chunks of onion and tomato. This dish fell supreme on our palate.   Continue reading

Dallas Fish Market Adds Raw Bar

Triptow 1 Editedby Steven Doyle   photos by Joey Stewart

It’s no secret that we are fans of Dallas Fish Market and chef Richard Triptow. He is a master in the kitchen and his dishes are pure art. His culinary experience had him working under three chefs at The Mansion: Dean Fearing, John Tesar, and Bruno Davaillon.

“The kitchen under Fearing was a very competitive environment, and most of what I learned about seafood came from Tesar. He took me under his wing and really taught me the styles and techniques that I still use today. Bruno definitely passed along his French influence to me,” Triptow told us. Continue reading
