Fried Food Glory at Texas State Fair

txfair9
by Steven Doyle

Our time at the Texas State Fair has been filled with laughter, music, beer and food. Plenty of food as a matter of fact. How the State Fair became synonymous with all things on a stick and fried is stuff of legend, but the holy grail of all things fried is undoubtedly the corn dog.         Continue reading

Vote For Your Candidate With Beer at Flying Saucer

beer3

The 2016 presidential race just got even better. Flying Saucer Draught Emporium debuted its 2016 U.S. presidential pint glasses, kicking off the brew pubs very own poll for the outcome of the election. Saucer’s poll is a proven success as sales of the glasses have correctly predicted the outcome of the past three presidential elections. (It’s a beer drinkers and we’re just living in it, right?)   Continue reading

betterBURGER Has A Good Burger, But Oh Those Fries

by Steven Doyle

When you title your restaurant betterBURGER you are tossing down a gauntlet in a city that is obsessed with their beef.  In the past year dozens of burger joints both gourmet and otherwise have opened their doors. It has been a fairly safe bet in the Dallas restaurant industry that burgers sell.

I met one of the owners, Vincent Vitalis, who was more than enthusiastic to chat up anyone who happened into his clean, tidy shop located on Lemmon just west of Inwood road. Vitalis is not necessarily new to the restaurant business.  He comes from a family of entrepreneurs that successfully run local stops such as the Original Market Diner on Harry Hines (think best breakfast and incredible pie) as well as Circle Grill in East Dallas (chicken fried steak and other home cooking fare).           Continue reading

Dining at the Italian Club of Dallas

by Steven Doyle

For just over 30 years the Italian Club of Dallas  has celebrated the spirit and traditions of Italy.  Located in Addison at 14865 Inwood Road , the Italian Club is not necessarily exclusive to its members. There are several exciting nights where they open their doors to the public for dinner, and lunch is always available to anyone.

The Italian Club benefits several local charitable organizations and itself is a not-for-profit. You might enjoy the Bocce Ball tournament that benefit’s the Special Olympics held in September. They also partnership with the USO and volunteer for the Children’s Craniofacial Association.    Continue reading

by Steven Doyle

We have been in search of the best pizza in Dallas but with a single hitch– not Neapolitan style. We have witnessed an onslaught of pizza being brought to the forefront and most of the new spots in Dallas are of the Neapolitan variety. There will be even more of this style of pizza coming, and that is fantastic. We love this, but what are some of the best non-Neapolitan pizzas in the Dallas area? Glad you asked.

Here is a list of a few of our favorites in no particular order. Peruse our list and offer your favorites. And for the best Neapolitan-style pizza? Stay tuned, we are dining out way through that scene as we write.     Continue reading

Do Phony Restaurants Taste Better? (Contest)

by Steven Doyle

Time reminds us that restaurants have become ever more popular in television as in real life, so we decided to think of as many fake restaurants that we could come up with that have been featured on television or a movie.  For the older crowd maybe the first you can think of was when Aunt Bee pulled out $400 from savings to open Bee’s Restaurant on the Andy Griffith Show.  Or a few generations later perhaps Arnold’s Drive In run by the future Mr. Miyagi on Happy Days.

Whatever your age or proclivity for television, we can almost bet that there is a fake restaurant in the midst.  Are we right Jerry Seinfeld (Monk’s)? Continue reading

We Checked Out Primebar’s $5 Burger Wednesday

by Steven Doyle

The love affair in Dallas continues with one of its favorite mistresses, the burger. Sure, Dallas is still seeing others like the taco. But Dallas dismissed FroYo and that little sweetheart, cupcake. Fickle and faddish sure, but Dallas’ main squeeze is still the gorgeous burger.

There are plenty of burger options rolling through Dallas. Some of our favorites can cost just a few dollars, and  some of the best are in excess of ten bucks. Last week we heard about a special burger at Primebar and we promised to investigate. But the story was not just that Primebar had a delicious burger, but that on Wednesdays the burger cost just five dollars all day. This past Wednesday we ate every one they had to offer.        Continue reading
