Tei Tei Robata Bar Still The Best

by Steven Doyle

Our roving contributing  photographer, Joey Stewart has been busier than ever hitting up the area’s finest sushi digs in Dallas. Today we visit Tei Tei Robata Bar on Henderson which is definitely one of our favorites.

Tei Tei was opened in 1998 by Teiichi Sakurai who is also the owner of Tei-An. Both are highly praised by local critics as Teiichi is the best at his craft. Teeich sold Tei Tei more recently to his chef, Katsutoshi Sakamoto, but you can spot the former owner sitting at the robata bar on any given night.          Continue reading

Holiday Vignettes: Janice Provost

by Steven Doyle

Janice Provost grew up in the Houston area on the Neal’s Family Farm and started out in the restaurant business as a caterer before finally going through the El Centro hospitality program in Dallas. She was eventually hired as a chef at Parigi, and ended up buying the business.

Janice runs the kitchen daily and is partly responsible for starting Café Momentum, which currently is a series of pop-up restaurants to assist at-risk young men. Café Momentum is slated to be an actual brick and mortar restaurant in the coming year and will provide on-the-job training for these kids.       Continue reading

Holiday Vignettes: Chef Abraham Salum

by Steven Doyle   photo by Robert Bostick

We have featured Abraham Salum several times on craveDFW throughout the year, and he is one chef that we never grow tired of chatting with. Abraham always has an entertaining story to share and truly loves his craft. He makes our job here so very simple, offering sage advice like he did in a  tamale series.

Abraham is the owner of Salum, the New American restaurant tucked away on the outskirts of Uptown at Cole and Fitzhugh, and Komali. Komali is a fun and energetic restaurant that serves authentic Mexican cuisine much like he experienced when living in Mexico City.   Continue reading

Mia Dia For Bright And Fresh Mex-Mex

by Steven Doyle

Hunkered down in the mess of construction rests a simple village of restaurants that includes a Bob’s Steakhouse outpost, a Fireside Pies, and something fairly tasty called Winewood Grill, all tucked away just off the bow of that nightmarish road rework alongside Grapevine, Texas. Also joining in the square is a newish anchor that has been running strong since October 2011, Mia Dia From Scratch.

Mia Dia is cheffed by Gabriel DeLeon sho you may remember from La Margarita in Irving, and  Masaryk Modern Mexican Kitchen in Addison which no longer exists. The chef might have been a foreshadowing of the scene to come and joins well executed Mex-Mex in the area like Abraham Salum’s Komali in Uptown and Mesa Veracruz in Oak Cliff as prime examples of how technique, use of fresh imaginative ingredients and the love for proper Mexican cookery should be plated.                Continue reading

Lazaranda Means Incredible Fish In Crave Language

by Steven Doyle

I recently had some beautiful dishes at Lazaranda in Addison, including a Sea Bass Ajillo, which is a seared Sea Bass with garlic and gaujillo peppers along with a dash of orange juice and tomato sauce. A true stand out. You may have heard about the small  group of restaurants from Mexico, with its single location in the States in the food capital of Addison, Texas Continue reading

Adelmo’s Celebrating 25 Years

by Steven Doyle

Tucked neat and tidy on Cole Avenue you might spy Adelmo’s, the cute Tuscan hide-away that is perfectly romantic and sultry.

Adelmo’s has survived the many faces of the Dallas restaurant scene and is pretty much today as it was 25 years ago when Adelmo Banchetti first opened his doors. Here you will find the obligatory Chianti served up with dreamy dishes such as Osso Bucco and a variety of house-made pastas. Each day you will discover a new chef’s menu hand-scrawled outside the front door listing off the day’s specials drawn from fresh ingredients just delivered. There are several choices for dessert included, and we recommend the warm bread pudding with a brandy caramel sauce. kiddiechefby Steven Doyle

Since spilling out of the Food Network, the cookery programs on television seem to be growing at a frantic pace. Now it is time to hide your children as Gordon Ramsay comes hunting for them. Ramsay doesn’t have plans to sauté them, but rather have them make him lunch on his latest program on Fox, Masterchef Juniors.      Continue reading
