Drink of the Week: Sambuca

by Katie Minchew

Sambuca. It’s rumored to be Oprah’s humble hangout when in Dallas, so it’s gotta be classy, right? Right. Sambuca is really “top drawer,” despite the long list of occasional less than classy drink names.    Continue reading →

Meet Cable Smith of Mason Bar

by Steven Doyle  photos by Robert Bostick

Earlier this week we introduced you to chef David Anthony Temple (DAT) who will be opening up the Mason Bar at the end of January. Temple will not be cooking alone and has brought in an inspiring chef that has cooked with both Kent Rathbun and Richard Blais. His demeanor is cool handed, and his cooking is inspirational. Dallas is most fortunate to have Cable Smith who will open as chef de cuisine at Mason Bar.

Please meet Cable Smith.          Continue reading →

Updated: Service Bar Closes This Weekend After 20 Years

by Bryan Coonrod

This weekend the Service Bar closes it’s doors after a 20 year run on Lower Greenville. I’m sure many of you have visited the bar or have heard some crazy story from someone else. The new Special Use Permit laws the city of Dallas passed last year has certainly turned Lower Greenville Avenue into a ghost town with only a handful of bars being allowed to stay in business. And now The Service bar has finally thrown in the towel and shut down.

The Service Bar was one of the first bars in Dallas to implement the modern version of a service industry night on Tuesdays in the early 90’s and many clubs today still have their own ( S.I.N. nights ). Those Tuesday nights were quite memorable. There was always a huge line to enter and getting a drink usually meant passing money over three to four people to the bartender to have a drink passed back to you as you squeezed into any open spot you could find.    Continue reading →

Top Dallas Bartenders to Compete in Houston’s Speed Rack

by Steven Doyle   photos by Susan Migdol

If you happen to be in Houston this coming weekend you might wish to attend a pretty awesome cocktail competition called Speed Rack that pits some of the hottest bartenders in Louisiana and Texas to raise cash and awareness for breast cancer. Sixteen female bartenders will be in competition for bragging rights, a $500 honorarium and a chance to compete nationally in New York City later in the year. Two of our best female bartenders will be in that competition.

You may have read about both of these women in the past on craveDFW; enter Bonnie Wilson from Whiskey Cake and Trina Nishimura from The Cedars Social representing Dallas in the Houston contest this Sunday, January 22, 2012.         Continue reading →

Take a Cocktail Class at The Usual

by Steven Doyle

Ever wanted to study under a master barman? Want to start a promising career in mixology or just want to impress at the next dinner party? Now is your chance to work with one of our areas best, Brad Hensarling.

You may know Brad from one of his bars in Fort Worth like The Usual on Magnolia, or just down the street his more divier haunt, The Chat Room. Brad recently worked with chef Matt McCallister in setting up the spirits program at Campo, and was seen behind the bar at pop-up bar 828 many times.   Continue reading →

2012 Dive Bar Tour Rolls Through Dallas

by Steven Doyle     photos by Robert Bostick

Planning the latest Dallas Bus Tour was a blast. Previous editions included tours that explored Tacos, Pizza, Burgers, and even vegan food in Dallas. The trick behind a successful tour I am finding is not to over think the process. Load up 25 adults onto a bus full of beer, wine and cocktails and point them in any direction and they will have fun.

Such is the case for the latest tour which explored dive bars of Dallas. Now here might be the rub for some, what exactly is a dive bar? I have my definition, you have yours. However, for the first tour exploring almost only alcohol I wanted to play it safe. No stabbings, no arrests, no crying.            Continue reading →

Bar and Book Opens at Lonestar

by Katie Minchew

Bar & Book. I’m going to get right down to business. Bar & Book has some good food! And they have some… inventive food–I will give them that much for sure. The most inventive item on the list was our first to test: Fat Elvis Fries. Oh yes, Elvis fries. Wondering what they are? Sweet potato fries covered in peanut butter sauce, chopped peppered bacon, and dried banana chips. It was not my favorite dish of the night, but I was so intrigued that I kept on munching, trying to sift out the different flavors that I couldn’t quite believe they combined in one dish. Elvis must have had a more adventurous pallet than mine.

After doing a lap around the awesome new 3 million dollar building, my dinner companion and I found a comfy little table looking down on the spacious bar, eager to accept the dozens of dishes being passed by the smiling waitresses.   Continue reading →

Crave Stuff To Enjoy While Reading Crave

by Steven Doyle

Pegasus News and FW Star Telegram food critic Teresa Gubbins sends us word that there is a new product we might want to investigate. She sent over a link to the Dallas Morning News where they actually reviewed a new breakfast cereal called Krave.

News writer Jeffrey Weiss didn’t care much for the new cereal being test marketed in North Texas, using words like ‘sawdust’ and ‘cold, fibrous mush’ to describe a bowl he prepared for himself. At one point he even threw out the most oft used culinary term ‘Yuck-o’, so we are thinking the near-namesake cold cereal is not going to be high on our shopping list for the craveDFW test kitchens.   Continue reading →
