Tomas and Drennan Side by Side Friday, March 8

When you own a gallery on Dragon Street, you don’t necessarily show your own artwork as a feature exhibition.  Generally the rule of thumb is to present artist in the space, so that you have a collection of works that differ but remain cohesive.  As two gallery owners on Dragon Street ponder this concept, they decided the best thing to do was to collaborate on an art show which feature them as artist.  The Cohn Drennan Contemporary’s owner Cathy Drennan and Mary Tomás owner of the Mary Tomás Gallery have collaborated together to create a show which features each owners works as painters.   Continue reading →

The history of Shinsei rolls back way before the June 2006 opening. It actually began before the owners Tracy Rathbun and Lynae Fearing opened the doors or even knew each other.   Continue reading →

Midnight Ramen Redux At Ten Bells This Saturday

ramen1by Steven Doyle

Ramen is the hot new topic on the lips of local food types. It is the perfect food with house-made noodles, a rich steamy broth, meaty pork belly and hopefully a wonderful poached egg. Just a few weeks back local chef from Lucia, Justin Holt, hosted two nights of ramen at  a few Oak Cliff night spots. I just received a text from the chef saying he is pumped about another night of ramen at Ten Bells Tavern this Saturday night, March 9, 2013.   Continue reading →

Natera’s New Menu Now Official At Marquee

Salmon webby Steven Doyle

I have known Andre Natera for more than a few years, and have enjoyed his talents while he worked the kitchens at the Fairmont Hotel in Dallas. He is a bright chef that has a passion for his craft while maintaining a delicious humility, a trait that could be well learned by a few chefs new and old. Recently we reported that Natera took over the helm at the Village Marquee Grill in Highland Park Village and I personally was elated.

I enjoyed former chef Tre Wilcox’s cuisine, and was now looking forward to seeing what Natera would do with the menu. I was also eager for more people to experience what I have had at the Fairmont, which has always been tough for locals to make that small trek downtown for an amazing meal for whatever reason.   Continue reading →

Dan Garrison set out to make what he and many others would consider some of the finest bourbon available in the country, certainly within the Texas borders.  Garrison Brothers started out making his whiskey back in 2005 and made many road trips back and forth to Kentucky to learn from the masters. Today  what we experience from sipping his product is nothing short of ethereal.   Continue reading →

Zen Bistro And Dessert Bar Adds Vegan And Gluten Free Cakeballs

DSC06241by Steven Doyle

Zen Bistro and Dessert Bar just became a little more zen-like with the addition of gluten free and vegan options in their dessert line. In the past two years the restaurant owned by sisters Chonnie Richey and Czarina Hounsel has grown in popularity which first started as a cool coffee shop with a vibe in Deep Ellum. It was a great place to snag a cake ball or two, which is their claim to fame after appearing on the Cooking Network.  Central Market loved the Zen cake balls so much they sell hoards of them each week.

Soon the girls found their customers asking about their Filipino heritage and wondering where they could actually find that style of food in Dallas. There aren’t many, to be sure.  So the girls changed their name from Zen Baking Company and added Bistro to the name. Now you can find an assortment of Filipino dishes, some in tapas portions for easy tasting and sharing.   Continue reading →
