Scotch, Scotch, Scotch, We Love Scotch

by Steven Doyle

On a recent visit to Second Floor located on not-the-first floor of the Westin Galleria in Dallas we were enamored by the amazing wall of Scotch that adorned the back bar. Owned by amazing chef Scott Gottlich of Bijoux fame, the restaurant is execu-cheffed by Joel Harloff. We have the low down on that new menu coming up soon, along with the cocktail menu that is also fresh and enticing. But that wall of Scotch had us first intrigued, so we sat at the bar and took notes.   Continue reading →

Elevation Burger Is A Healthier Burger Option

by Steven Doyle    photos by Joey Stewart

Elevation Burger opened quietly in January of 2012 and is part of a chain of restaurants that started in Virginia by a man who wanted a burger similar to what he had while living in California. This meant organic, grass-fed and free range. Cow is just tastier when they are allowed to run around munching grass free of hormones and all the nasties that are so prevalent in our food today.

Elevation Burger dots the East Coast but moved into Austin in 2009. There are plans for two more Dallas locations that will be coming soon, but until then you can get a healthier burger option at the Hillcrest location.      Continue reading →

Pecan Lodge Has Insane Weekend And Joins Our Top Five List For BBQ In Dallas

By Steven Doyle

Pecan Lodge has been one of our go-to spots for BBQ in Dallas since their debut at the Dallas Farmers Market. Owned by Diane and Justin Fourton, the duo has been busy making their mark on the BBQ landscape one rib at a time. And damn are those ribs tasty.

Recently the Fourton’s were featured on the Food Network slice of insanity, Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives with Guy Fieri. Not sure if this little restaurant that is located in the Market’s Shed Two qualifies as a dive or a diner, it certainly isn’t a drive-in. Regardless, the program made a huge impact on the young business.           Continue reading →

Celebrate National Donut Day In Style

by Steven Doyle

There was a time when I could freely eat a box of donuts at one sitting, this was when I was in high school. I went to W.T. White in north Dallas and we had a donut shop called Nelson’s. I would pass by the tiny shop located near LBJ on the south side of Midway and order a small box from the elderly nelson couple on the way to school nearly every day. They have since sold the shop and the donuts are not the same.  Donuts never will be as good as they were when I was 15

Today is National Donut Day and we want to celebrate in true style. We have assembled a short list of some of our favorites in the Dallas area and hope you join us by scarfing a box.          Continue reading →

Mamma Mia! At Dallas Music Hall Until Sunday

by Steven Doyle

More than likely you know the plot and have seen the film adaptation or possibly even the live theater production of Mamma Mia! since its debut in the late ‘90’s. The songs will be most familiar with those growing up in the 1970’s disco era and listened to the endless melodies of the Swedish pop group ABBA.

ABBA has sold nearly 400 million records worldwide and continues to sell millions each year even to this day, so it is no wonder that Mamma Mia! is so successful. Someone is listening.  Last night a packed house at the Dallas Music Hall in Fair Park danced in their seats and reveled in the familiar music and sound bites as they were whisked back to a time in Greece just days before a young brides wedding.                Continue reading →

Chef Josh Black Lands At People’s Last Stand

by Steven Doyle

We have been following Josh Black since he was at Stephan Pyles, and eventually landing the executive chef position at CampO.  Recently Black made off and scored the lead kitchen duties at the People’s Last Stand located in Mockingbird Station. At first this seemed like an odd choice for someone trained as well as Black, but upon further inspection it made glaring sense.

The down side for a chef at People’s Last Stand is that there really isn’t a kitchen. The space was built for a cocktail wonderland, and certainly the staff has excelled greatly in that department.  A recent visit had me sitting on the edge of my seat as general manager and lead bartender Omar Yeefoon, formerly of Cedars Social, was perfecting a made-from-scratch tonic.  He had several vials sitting out and was conferring with his staff to see which they might be serving that evening.  They were all good, of course.     Continue reading →

We Power Coupled At Del Frisco

by Steven Doyle

Last evening we tried out the summer Del Frisco Double Eagle Steak House deal, the Power Couple that offers a full meal for two at $99, not including drinks or gratuity.  We were met at the door by the familiar face of the sommelier Jennifer Jaco who had invited us in, and we were elated when she offered to give us a tour of the wine cellar after our dinner.

As you can imagine, the dinner was very good. What’s not to like about Chef David Holben’s steaks? The beef offered is a prime filet that is smattered with peppercorns and seared immaculately, as expected. But the star for us was the crab cake that is also included in the Power Couple deal. The crab cake was made of crab, some seasonings, and very little else. It didn’t take long to tackle the large cake.         Continue reading →
