Friday’s Five Fabulous Food Finds

by Steven Doyle

Each week we scour the city in search of the very best Dallas has to offer. We check into restaurants both old and new looking for interesting food to discuss with you so you can make handy decision when dining out.

We do not necessarily write up each item we enjoy, and often have photos that we will save for another week. However, we will share some of the most awe-inspiring dishes on Friday in what we like to call Friday’s Five Fabulous Food Finds.     Continue reading →

Same Sex Kiss Day At Chick Fil A

by Steven Doyle  Photos by Robert Bostick

With a political volley between those that support same sex marriage and those that are in opposition, Chick Fil A played the media like a fine violin. Days ago Mike Huckabee pronounced a Chick Fil A Day driving hordes of chicken sandwich eaters through each store in what many viewed as a vote against same sex marriage.      Continue reading →

Hank Has A Treat For You

by Steven Doyle

In the mid 1900’s John “Bud” sailed the Great Lakes as a shipman, eventually graduating to captain. John “Bud”’s wife Helen would join the captain aboard his ship one day and was treated to a dessert bar that was like no other. Helen was so taken by this treat that she asked for the recipe, and to her delight the cook happily obliged. The cook’s name? Hank.

The recipe for the dessert bar was handed down for several generations and is now in the hands of Dallasite Stacy Shaw who had sampled the bars since she was quite young. She more recently asked her grandmother Edie for the recipe and today Shaw is marketing Hank’s Dessert Bars for all the world to share. Or so Shaw hopes.           Continue reading →

Jayne Behind the Wheel

by Jayne Chobot

It is a long story as to why I didn’t get my first driver’s license until 2 weeks prior to my thirty-third birthday. While I did live in New York City for most of my adult life and certainly didn’t need to drive during that time, I’m not actually from NY so that’s not really an excuse. Mostly I was just too damn busy. I spent the summers of my teen years living in a small beach town where I could walk or bike everywhere, and during the rest of the year I was so involved in school and local theater that I couldn’t be bothered to find the time to learn to drive. We weren’t allowed to have cars on campus at my small university in Pennsylvania anyway, and then I high-tailed it up to the big bad Big Apple as soon as I could.     Continue reading →

Two New DEBC Beers Premiering This Month

Deep Ellum Brewing Company will launch two brand new beers to the market starting July 31st – one is a seasonal and one will join the year-round lineup for DEBC.  Yes, “Wealth and Taste” is a Rolling Stones reference (but also an homage to the originator of this style of beer – Duvel.  Duvel actually means devil in Flemish) and is a seasonal batch.  It was built in two 30 barrel batches – one batch was aged in Chardonnay barrels and one batch went through the normal fermentation process then they were blended together to get the balance they were looking for.  Continue reading →

A Visit To Tate’s Craft Cocktails

by Steven Doyle and Jason Kosmas

I stopped in Tate’s Craft Cocktails located on McKinney Avenue last week when I was tooling around town with cocktail maven Jason Kosmas and we met the new manager and chief barman, JW Tate. JW is the son of the owner and comes to Dallas from Winston-Salem, North Carolina where the original bar is located.

You may recall Tate’s opened in Dallas back in December with Matt Ceneviva at the helm. I spoke with Matt about JW and he said, “I worked with JW when he first started bartending and the grasshopper has actually outreached the master.”          Continue reading →
