Outstanding In The Field With Acme F&B

by Jennifer Thomas

Outstanding in the Field, the pioneering farm-dinner series that has inspired pop-up supper clubs across North America and around the world, returns to the Dallas area on Tuesday, October 23 to set its long, white-linen table in the fields of Sloans Creek Farm in Dodd City. Dallas chefs Jeana Johnson and Colleen O’Hare of Acme F&B and Good 2 Go Taco will bring their crew out to the al fresco kitchen to prepare a multi-course meal, sourcing on-the-hoof ingredients for the menu from the fields of host farmers Nathan and Ellen Melson and neighboring farms.

“Our past events in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area have been filled with enthusiastic diners,” said OITF founding chef and artist Jim Denevan. “Here, local food means Texas food, and everybody can get behind that. Even visiting non-Texans. Sloans Creek Farm, where the Melson family tends pasture-raised cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and chickens, is the perfect spot for Chefs Jeana and Colleen to wow us with their whole-animal approach to good eating.”    Continue reading →

Chef Galindo Leaving Hatties For Dallas Chop House

by Steven Doyle

Whitney Filloon, the editor of Eater Dallas, eagle-eyed the help wanted sign on Craigslist announcing the opening for the execu-chef at Hatties in the Bishop Arts District. It is true that Esteban Galindo is leaving the ten year old restaurant. Chef Galindo has been with the restaurant for eight of those ten years.

We made a call to Galindo who was busy prepping for a party and he said he was indeed leaving Hatties and has tendered his resignation, but gave a two week notice. Look for the chef to start work at Dallas Chop House in coming weeks.

Mesa Veracruz Has New Fall Menu

by Steven Doyle

Raul and Olga Reyes have been on the Dallas restaurant scene for some time now. First the coupled opened La Palapa Veracruzana which shuttered in 2009, then more recently with one of the finest interior Mexican restaurants in Dallas, Mesa Veracruz Coastal Cuisine. Natives of Veracruz, Mexico, the couple stay true to their craft, enhancing the menu to reflect the seasons and the taste from their roots. The menu was just recently updated and we were invited to sample some of the new cuisine.

You may still enjoy the classics such as Mesa’s ceviche, which is made sweet with a slight tomatoey goodness and the addition of ripe avocados and fresh cut cilantro that reminds me of my first vacation in Mexico. Or the classic Enmoladas which is made with house-made mole which takes a full day to create and well over 20 ingredients. The family has mad skills.   Continue reading →

I stopped in to chat with the guys a few days ago and enjoyed a spirited conversation on how they started the bar, update on the package store across the street and why they can’t have anything nice.      Continue reading →

Truluck’s Addison Closed

by Steven Doyle

I just spoke to Bo Dorton from Truluck’s after getting a Deep Throat sort of tip that the Addison restaurant would be closing after sixteen and a half years of operation. Dorton started with the restaurant seventeen years ago and actually opened the Addison location, so it was a particularly disheartening bit of news for him to take.

The closure is due to losing their lease on Belt Line, but they will be opening another massive location near Downtown on McKinney. Truluck’s other locations remain open.

It may be no coincidence that this is the beginning of stone crab season.
