Andy Peay Visits Del Frisco

by Steven Doyle

As the first official wine dinner at Del Frisco’s with the new Wine Director Jennifer Jaco, we were eager to not only witness the sommelier in action but meet her guest host for the evening, Andy Peay.  Peay himself hadn’t spent much time in Texas over the past several years so this was a particular boon for not only Jaco, but her guests.

Jaco worked the room with her typical aplomb and signature grin. You could get the sense that she was extremely pleased to be in the room that night. The sommelier has a nice Dallas following and the room filled quickly.              Continue reading

Where In the World Is Bob Sambol?

by Steven Doyle

Bob Sambol is alive and well and not working at any steakhouse, or restaurant for that matter. We did track down some information that lead us to Syracuse, New York at a 133 year old sausage company where our famous restaurateur Bob is Vice President of Marketing and Sales – namely at Hoffman Sausage Company.     Continue reading

Katy Trail Ice House Has Awesome Barbecue

by Steven Doyle

We recently ran across Jimmy Fell, the general manager over at the Katy Trail Ice House. You will know Fell most recently from Red Dog Right in Grapevine, but most prominently when he worked for Jim “Sevy” Severson at his namesake restaurant on Preston. Fell was excited to talk about the latest addition to the menu at the Ice House, and how it has drastically improved not only the cuisine but what can be long wait times for the food to arrive at your table.

Enter a giant behemoth of a smoker that is a bit displaced for the moment while the owners build a shed complete with its own exhaust system on the property. Until then, the smoker is located about a block away in a parking lot owned by Katy Trail Ice House.         Continue reading

Kenny Bowers Wants You To Eat His 24 Inch Weiner: UPDATED

by Steven Doyle

Just when you thought it safe to put away your defibrillator, Kenny Bowers, that irreverent chef who runs Kenny’s Woodfire Grill and Kenny’s Burger Joint has come out with a massive piece of meat on a bun. No, we are not talking about the El Jefe Grande that weighs in at seven pounds stuffed with seven thousand calories.  This is a gargantuan hot dog to rival Nolan Ryan’s two foot long dog at the Ballpark at Arlington.   Continue reading

Steak Battle This Weekend

by Steven Doyle

Want to watch as two chefs go nose to nose in a heated grilling battle to the finish? All this Iron Chef business just gets me hungry, and what better way to satisfy that hunger than with beef. This Saturday watch two of our local grill-masters show their chops in the Walmart Choice Steak Challenge presented by Kingsford charcoal.   Chefs Rodman Shields from Nick & Sam’s and Richard Chamberlain from Chamberlain’s Steak and Chop House will compete Saturday, April 28 at the Walmart located at 1521 N. Cockrell Hill Rd.   Continue reading

ZaZa’s Dragonfly New Spring Menu, Plus Several Changes

by Steven Doyle

A graduate of California Culinary Academy in San Francisco, chef Dan Landsberg first moved to Dallas in 1996 when we was sent to open Fog City Diner, the stand-out building where Truluck’s now operates from. From Fog City Landsberg had a stint at Toscana where he worked with several other local chefs including Gilbert Garza (now owner of Suze) and David Holben (now corporate executive chef with the Del Frisco brand).

Several moves later including a run as executive chef at Stephan Pyles and the man responsible for revamping Tillman’s Roadhouse, Landsberg is using his vast imagination at ZaZa’s Dragonfly. There Landsberg has a creative outlet that flourishes and changes with each season.         Continue reading

Pecan Lodge DDD Episode Premiers May 28

by Steven Doyle

For those following the wanderings of Sir Guy Fieri of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, you can catch local BBQ mavens at Pecan Lodge as their episode premiers Memorial Day, May 28, 2012. The little BBQ Mecca is located in Shed Two at the Dallas Farmers Market and serves up some remarkable brisket, sausage, burnt ends and something they call a Hot Mess, which is a divine confluence of a giant smoked sweet potato crowned with brisket.     Continue reading

Sullivans Steak and Cake? Yes, Please

by David Donalson

Starting today and extending through the month of April, Sullivan’s Steakhouse will be running a Steak and Cake special where you can get an 8 oz. filet, a 4 oz. crab cake and either a wedge or Caesar salad, all for $39. I was invited to come check this out.

Sullivan’s is more like 3 different establishments under one roof: a bar/patio, a dining room and a lounge called Ringside. I showed up a bit early so I could get a feel for the restaurant and the bar was popping. Their signature cocktail is the Knockout, a martini made from Smirnoff Orange Vodka infused with fresh pineapple with an orange twist. I was worried that it would be too sweet but it tasted exactly like fresh cut pineapple with a punch. This will go great sitting out on the patio, listening to the live music. But I am here for the food.    Continue reading
